Construction Classes Print

YouthBuild allows students to learn basic construction skills while giving back to their community by creating safe, affordable housing for low- to moderate-income families. Participants devote half of their time at YouthBuild to the jobsite, where they build or rehabilitate up to 8 homes per year. Thus, students are not trained in one specific skill, but get a general overview of all skills from framing to finish. Students take skill-based classes and must pass competencies on each skill; however the main focus is on service to the community and the development of safe and affordable places to live.

OSHA Safety/First Aid /CPR – This course utilizes Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and American Red Cross (ARC) materials to provide students with a basic knowledge of safety. The student will gain an increased understanding of first aid skills and construction worksite safety. This course is theoretical and applied and no prerequisites are required.

Residential Construction Applications – This is an entry level course and is the applied portion of our residential construction program.  The student will gain a more complete understanding of the construction process through the building of homes. Students will learn basic skills and complement the knowledge gained in the Core Curriculum course.  This prerequisite for this course is OSHA Safety/First Aid/CPR.

Core Curriculum –This course is an introductory course designed by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) to give the student entry level knowledge of the skills needed to work in the construction industry. This course is conducted in a mobile classroom on a working construction site and provides a theoretical approach, which includes a performance skills evaluation that is measured in the Residential Construction Applications course. No prerequisites are required.

Carpentry Fundamentals – This course builds upon the basic skills, as the NCCER designed curriculum directs the student in specific understanding of the theoretical requirements of residential carpentry. The tasks presented in this course are the fundamental building blocks for all carpenters. This course also includes a performance skills evaluation that is measured in the Residential Construction Applications course. The prerequisite for this course is Core Curriculum.
